What is UI-View

UI-View is being developed by Roger Barker G4IDE. The following extract, from the UI-View help file describes what the program is capable of.

"UI-View aims to make packet a little bit friendlier, and to add some extra interest by offering something slightly different. UI-View's three main features are:-

It will plot on maps the locations of stations that it hears transmitting UI-View compatible beacons, so you are aware of who is active on packet around you. (This can also act as a useful propagation indicator.)

It will show weather reports from any stations sending out UI-View compatible weather beacons.
It has a casual messaging facility, which is designed to encourage local packet "chat".

UI-View is designed to be able to work in a variety of situations and with a variety of hardware. It has five modes of operation:-

As a WinPack DDE application (receive only)
With its own TNC in terminal mode
With its own TNC in KISS mode
In BPQ host mode
In AGWPE host mode

This means that UI-View can be used with just about any packet hardware that has ever been made, including Baycom modems and even packet via your soundcard (by using AGWPE).

UI-View's name is derived from the fact that it does everything via UI (Unnumbered Information) frames. UI frames have always been used for beacons, and the AX25 V2 specification, dated 1984, mentions the possibility of using them for "round-table" discussion. UI-View uses them for all its messaging functions, which means that any one-to-one chat can instantly turn into a "round-table".

UI-View is designed for use in the UK. I have no idea how suitable it is for use in other countries. The maps need to have a rectangular projection, with evenly spaced lines of longitude and latitude, otherwise the plotted positions of stations will be hopelessly inaccurate"

What Do I Need To Run It ?

Useful UI-View links

There is a lot of information on the web for UI-View. The following are just some of the links that will provide more information, software and maps.

Support for UI-View is provided through www.onelist.com. On this site you will find a list for Ui-View. It is well worth joining this list as there is a lot of software, maps and information available. The Author G4IDE has created this list to provide support rather than clogg up the packet network.
